In Agreement, rearranged, a quiet room is transformed by constructed (natural) elements, where the movement of air becomes an active material and an invisible hand performing a form of automatic writing. An installation of four powerful electric fans is placed in a formation in an otherwise stripped-down room. A large number of thin sheets of paper, with a word printed on every other sheet, lie on the floor in the middle of the formation and swirl around between the fans. The words are mixed up, disappear, reappear, land randomly, and create new sentences before the viewer's eyes.
The work moves in the borderland between control and chaos, between structure and dissolution. The original text from which the words come has been fragmented and is now being reshaped by chance and movement. In this process, the words are recharged, and their meaning shifts as they literally fly through the room. An interactivity arises in the encounter between the physical and the linguistic. The viewer is invited to read, interpret, and react in real time to the combinations of words that arise randomly. At the same time, the installation speaks to larger issues such as energy/economy, climate/politics, and nature/culture.
The aesthetics are deliberately understated and stripped down, inspired by public organizations, documents, and processes. Paper quality, size, typography, fan power, sound, and placement are carefully considered. Small details that are usually overlooked or considered neutral or impersonal become important by being highlighted and given new meaning in context and movement.
Agreement, rearranged is not a finished work or agreement, but an ongoing negotiation between materials, technology, text, and viewers. Each occasion creates a situation and formulations that can never be repeated in exactly the same way, an installation that sets language in motion.
